It is fascinating to look a some varied reactions to events in the last couple of days.
First, the death of former White House Press Secretary Tony Snow: I have read many of his columns and heard him on both radio and TV. I was always impressed with his knowledge, professionalism, and unbelievable good cheer. Many of those on both sides of the political aisle agree.
But the reactions across the Internet to his passing are absolutely hideous! You expect them from far-left sites like “DailyKos” and “Democratic Underground”, but to see the same vitriol displayed on abcnews.com and in the LA Times is horrendous! Ben Johnson at frontpagemag.com (WARNING!!! BAD LANGUAGE!!!) documents some of the comments.
Funny how there were very few (I’ll admit that there were some – human nature is not innately kind) evil comments from conservative writers and commenters about Senator Ted Kennedy’s brain cancer diagnosis. There were no comments about dancing on his grave, partying, and enjoying a “Kennedy-free day”.
Then comes the reaction to the cover of the New Yorker magazine which was released on Monday showing Obama in Arabic dress, his wife dressed like a guerrilla, and a portrait of bin Laden over a fireplace containing a burning American flag, all in an oval-shaped room. Now, that magazine is as liberal as anything else that is published today, and has joined the ranks of the worshipers of the Obamessiah. They were not prepared for the backlash of hatred and scorn that they received from their own kind over this cover painting.
Contrast that with the conservative reaction to some of the drawings, cartoons, books, and even movies that portray President Bush. Michelle Malkin documents some of the hideous caricatures of not only the president, but others in the administration. She just added a cartoon from Rolling Stone that makes fun of Senator McCain as a POW in Vietnam.
Where is the outrage on the conservative side? Why aren’t we rioting, burning buildings, beheading our enemies, or all of the other things that the “religion of peace” and the “religion of tolerance” (i.e., liberalism) tend to do when “offended”?
If my feelings mirror those of my fellow conservatives, then the overwhelming emotion at the moment is frustration.
But maybe we are winning in the arena of ideas. If the best they can do is to make juvenile attacks and whine and cry about “it’s not fair!”, then maybe there is hope after all.
We’ll see, won’t we?
